Beach Safety with Young Children

Beach Safety with Young Children

Many of us love nothing more during summer than a day at the beach with the family. In this article we share our tips for enjoying a worry-free beach experience for your family.

1. Sunscreen Essentials:

Start your beach day by generously applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 on your child’s delicate skin (and yours!). Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming. Opt for water-resistant formulas to ensure lasting protection.

2. First Aid Essentials:

Pack a basic first aid kit with essentials like waterproof band-aids, antiseptic wipes, Stingose for sandfly bites, and any necessary medications. Keep your first aid knowledge and skills up-to-date for added peace of mind.

3. Shade Seekers:

Create a shaded retreat by bringing along a beach umbrella or pop-up tent. Young children, especially infants, have sensitive skin that can easily be affected by prolonged sun exposure. If you can, buy a shade option with a reflective surface. Also aim to go to the beach either early or late in the day to avoid the height of the sun’s heat.

4. Water Wisdom:

When introducing your child to the ocean, remain vigilant. Stay close and provide constant supervision. Even shallow waters can present unexpected challenges for young swimmers. Invest in a flotation device for added safety but seek advice on the best option and don’t rely on it to keep your child safe. Your own attention is the most important safety factor for your child – stay off your phone.

5. Sand-Safe Play:

Ensure a safe and comfortable play area by bringing a beach blanket or towel. Keep beach toys age-appropriate, steering clear of small items that could pose a choking hazard. Supervise your child’s play in the sand to prevent accidental ingestion of sand.

6. Hydration Headquarters:

The summer sun can be relentless, making hydration a priority. Pack a cooler with plenty of water and hydrating snacks to keep your child’s energy levels up. Encourage frequent sips to prevent dehydration.

7. Footwear Matters:

While those tiny toes may love the feel of the sand, consider bringing water shoes to protect your child’s feet from hot sand and sharp shells. These beach-friendly shoes provide comfort and prevent burns from the scorching sand.

8. Be Weather Wise:

Keep an eye on the weather forecast before heading to the beach. Avoid the water during storms or when lifeguards aren’t on duty. Stay informed about local conditions, tides, and any weather advisories, including extreme heat.
