Emotional Wellbeing for the Family

Emotional Wellbeing for the Family

Emotional wellbeing for the family is an important factor for a child’s wellbeing. The family environment and relationships within the family have a significant impact on children’s development and outcomes later in life.

Why Emotional Wellbeing for the Family is So Important

When children experience healthy family relationships it helps them to feel secure and loved. This in turn gives them a realistic and positive sense of self and their abilities. They also learn important relationship skills for building connections with others throughout their lives.

The main qualities of a strong family unit include:

  • Open and honest (age appropriate) communication
  • A sense of togetherness and shared values and beliefs
  • Showing affection through words and actions
  • Spending time together doing shared activities
  • Prioritising the family and supporting each other
  • Accepting and appreciating each family member and their unique qualities and contributions
  • Being able to adapt to change and respond to difficulties constructively

No Family Unit is Perfect

Every family faces challenges and experiences conflict, so there’s no need to be aiming for perfection when it comes to trying to nurture these qualities within the family unit.

The most important thing is that the intention is there to increase the proportion of interactions that are positive and to find ways to deal with conflict as constructively as possible when it does arise.

Whilst as parents, we do need to buffer children to some degree from the stresses we may be experiencing as adults, allowing children to see family members successfully managing stressful situations, can help them to learn positive coping strategies

Ideas for Positively Influencing Your Family’s Collective Wellbeing

Connect: Eat meals together and talk. Encourage your child to make friendships and maintain an active connection with them. Help them foster meaningful connections with others through day care, school, community, sports and family.

Keep Learning: Read together; visit a museum; make something together. Learning is vital for social and cognitive development. Encouraging your child to learn new skills and be creative will enhance their self-esteem and social interaction.

Be Active: Play together; go for walks; cycle. Play is essential for your child’s development and doing active things as a family increases your sense of togetherness. Exercising regularly is good for everyone’s physical and mental wellbeing.

Take Notice: Look at nature together; talk about your day over meals; talk about things you are grateful for. Being curious and aware of the things around them helps children learn and to be aware of their thoughts and feelings.

Give: Make a present for someone; say something nice; give some time to help someone else. When we are kind to others and give our time and energy to someone else, it is very rewarding and helps children understand empathy

We hope these tips will help you take care of the emotional wellbeing of your family…
